Governor Cuomo announced that the state’s unemployment insurance minimum and maximum weekly benefits would increase on October 6, a result of legislation he signed in March 2013.
The State Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund held $3.5 billion in debt to the federal government when the bill was signed, a result of the state’s inability to pay for all of its benefit claimants. The legislation Cuomo signed last year forced a quicker schedule of payments to reduce the debt, and will now raise the weekly minimum and maximum payouts available to insurance recipients. The weekly minimum payment will increase from $64 to $100, and the maximum will increase from $405 to $420.
