Building a Solid Foundation

The New York State Laborers’ apprenticeship program is a path to a solid, fulfilling construction career that allows you to earn while you learn. Combining on-the-job training and nationally-recognized classroom instruction, the education New York State Laborers apprentices receive is second to none. Apprentices gain experience in cutting-edge construction practices while learning core skills, and quickly become knowledgeable and safe workers that contractors want on their jobsites.

The NYS Laborers believe that each member, no matter how far along in their career as a laborer, should be provided with the opportunity to sharpen their skills, learn new practices and technology and receive career path training. NYS Laborers are consistently provided these opportunities through advanced classes that allow them to keep pace with the ever-changing construction industry, and enable them to become eligible for more job opportunities and advancements.

We have 20 training facilities across the state, and our state-of-the-art training centers offer courses in such areas as environmental remediation, mason tending, pipe laying, drilling, blasting, asphalt work and more!

In honor of National Apprenticeship Week, the Laborers Local 60 Training Fund and Local 1010 Training Fund joined forces to host an asphalt training for apprentices, and union members looking to refresh their skills. The hands-on training focused on the placement, spreading, raking and compaction of asphalt—and of course, the safest way to do all of it! These skills are CRUCIAL to heavy highway work—and we can all thank the men and women doing this difficult job for a safe, smooth drive throughout our communities!

Cory See
“A desk job isn’t really for me.”
Following a fifteen year military career and serving overseas, Cory See was back stateside for two weeks when he was driving his motorcycle home and was struck by a drunk driver. Ultimately, his leg was so severely injured it couldn’t be saved. But still, Cory is determined to live his life to the fullest. Cory is a first year LIUNA Local 60 apprentice who says he loves the work and the challenge of it. He says becoming a union member is a great opportunity that has set him up for the future, much like the military did, and the union feels like a family.

“There is nothing like being a LIUNA laborer. You make good money and have excellent healthcare. You can take care of yourself and your family, and there’s nothing better than that security. The union and your union brothers and sisters have your back. You won’t find that in other careers. You have the opportunity to start an apprenticeship with the laborers—you take it.”

Rawda Olbi
“There is a place for everyone on the job site. As a woman in construction, I know this firsthand and want to encourage more women to begin a career with LIUNA. My apprenticeship is preparing me with the knowledge and skills I need to be successful and I want to see more women experience this kind of success in their careers. There is room for women to join. Not only men. Women can absolutely do this job.”
Jorge Luis Farias
“Being a LIUNA Local 60 laborer means being able to go home at the end of the day knowing your work is directly impacting your community. Knowing you’re making a positive difference while earning a living that allows you to live comfortably and save for your future is rare. There is a lifelong career as a laborer and apprenticeship is the first step. Get in touch with your local union hall and sign up.”
Julio Valencia
“Becoming an apprentice changed my life. I’m on a path now to a solid career that I know will provide for me, and for my family. I’m proud to be a Local 60 apprentice.”
